Two Danish Christmas songs

1. Dejlig er jorden
Text: B.S. Ingemann, Melody: Silesian trad.

Texts of the songs:

1.
Dejlig er jorden,
prægtig er Guds himmel,
skøn er sjælenes pilgrimsgang!
Gennem de fagre
riger på jorden
gå vi til paradis med sang!

Tider skal komme,
tider skal henrulle,
slægt skal følge slægters gang.
Aldrig forstummer
tonen fra himlen
i sjælens glade pilgrimssang.

Englene sang den
først for markens hyrder,
skønt fra sjæl til sjæl det lød:
Fred over jorden!
Menneske, fryd dig,
os er en evig frelser fød!

English:

Beauty around us,
glory above us,
lovely is earth and the smiling skies.
Singing we pass along
pilgrims upon our way.
Through these fair lands Paradise.

ages are coming,
roll on and vanish.
Children shall follow where fathers passed.
Never our pilgrim song,
joyful and heavenborn,
shall cease while time and mountain last.

First to the shepherds
sweetly the angels
sang it at midnight, a song of morn:
“Glory to God on high,
peace and good will to men.
Today is Christ, our Saviour, born!”

2.
Her kommer, Jesus, dine små,
til dig i Bethlehem at gå;
oplys enhver i sjæl og sind
at finde vejen ind til dig.

Vi løber dig med sang imod
og kysser støvet for din fod;
o salig stund, o klare nat,
da du blev født, vor sjæleskat!

Men Jesus, ak, hvor går det til,
at dog så få betænke vil
den inderlige kærlighed,
der drog dig til vor jammer ned?

Så drag os ganske til dig hen,
o Jesus, du vor sjæleven,
at hver af os så inderlig
i troen må omfavne dig!

Så skal det ske, at vi engang
blandt alle helgens frydesang
i Himlens søde Paradis
skal prise dig på englevis.

English,
translated by Harriet Reynolds Krauth Spaeth (1845-1925)

Thy little ones, dear Lord, are we,
And come Thy lowly bed to see;
Enlighten every soul and mind,
That we the way to Thee may find.

With songs we hasten Thee to greet,
And kiss the dust before Thy feet;
O blessed hour, O sweetest night,
That gave Thee birth, our soul’s delight.

O draw us wholly to Thee, Lord,
Do Thou to us Thy grace accord,
True faith and love to us impart,
That we may hold Thee in our heart.

Until at last we too proclaim
With all Thy saints, Thy glorious Name;
In paradise our songs renew,
And praise Thee as the angels do.

“Dejlig er jorden” is one of the most famous Christmas hymns in Denmark, Norway and Faroe Island and other Nordic countries. The text is written by the Dane B.S. Ingemann in 1850. It is based on an old Silesian folksong: “Schönster Herr Jesus”
In this video it is sung in Norwegian.

The photos were all taken December 16th, 2009, the first snowy day of the year in Denmark.

2. Her kommer, Jesus, dine små
Text: H.A. Brorson, Melody: J.A.P. Schulz

The text of this song was written by Adolph Brorson (1721-65), and the German composer Johann Abraham Peter Schulz (1747-1800) composed the melody. He served as Court Kapellmeister in Copenhagen from 1787 to 1795.
In Germany he is known as the composer of the melody for Matthias Claudius’ poem “Der Mond ist aufgegangen” and the Christmas carol “Ihr Kinderlein kommet”.
